In February 2024, AFRS firefighter drone pilots responded to a critical call in Adams County, Ohio, to assist in the search for a missing child with Autism. This experience inspired us to explore how artificial intelligence (AI) could transform search and rescue efforts.
Shortly after, our team conducted groundbreaking experiments using AI to streamline processes like generating search areas and analyzing map data. The results were astounding: AI accomplished in under a minute what typically takes a trained team 30–60 minutes. Its ability to prioritize areas with the highest likelihood of locating the missing child, combined with its accuracy, left us in awe.
This breakthrough sparked conversations between AFRS, Boston University, and other leaders in the field about creating a nationwide AI-powered system for first responders. However, despite the promise of this innovation, the initiative stalled due to a lack of funding.
But there is hope. On December 10, 2024, AFRS leadership had an inspiring meeting with the team from AutismCincy.org. Together, we discussed the vision of using AI to help locate missing children with Autism. We also agreed that immediate steps could be taken to enhance first responders’ abilities while the technology continues to develop.
One immediate opportunity is improving training for first responders in understanding Autism. By incorporating Autism education into police, fire, and EMS academy curricula, we can ensure future generations of first responders are better equipped to interact with and locate children with Autism during emergencies.
AFRS leadership quickly connected AutismCincy.org with public safety leaders and state legislators to start building this foundation. This collaboration is a testament to the power of teamwork in making meaningful progress.
Now, we need your support to continue this vital mission.
